Behind the curtain: First steps in Administration

Hi Charlotte, could you please introduce yourself and tell us about your career?

I’m a nursing assistant, and I spent several years working in nursing homes and hospitals. But at one point, I had to stop practicing due to my health. That’s when I decided to switch fields- which wasn’t easy, considering I had only ever studied for nursing and my degree didn’t offer me any other opportunities. It’s a pretty specific field and it’s hard to move to something else.

So that’s why you decided to take a course. How did you choose your new direction- was there anything you were worried about?

"I wanted to stay in the medical community because it was the only area I knew and had mastered. So I decided to start taking medical secretary courses again. Since I was still working, I had to find a training center that offered me some flexibility. I was afraid of not succeeding and of not having the time to study properly. Fortunately, the trainer was very present and accompanied us throughout the training to allow us to move forward, gain confidence and get there.

So that’s when you decided to take courses. How did you choose your new direction- was there anything you were worried about?

I definitely wanted to stick close to healthcare, because it was the only thing I knew. So I decided to take a medical secretary course. Of course, I was still working, so I need a training center with a flexible schedule. I was afraid I wouldn’t have the time to study and would fail. Fortunately, the teacher was great – he was there for us every step of the way, and really got our confidence up and helped us through the process.

How were things after graduation? Was it easy to land a new job, and how do you like it so far?

I started applying as soon as I graduated. I think having an actual diploma really gave me an edge on the other candidates- I was able to go to several interviews, and had my pick of amazing positions.  Finally, I decided to start at the Training Center – they happened to be looking for someone to complete the administration team, and they extended the opportunity to recent graduates. I decided to apply, and they liked me! So I ended up really finding a new path in life, and a good long-term perspective at that.

Great! And what about the current situation – how has the pandemic affected your work?

Well, right now, my colleagues and I are working from home. We got our heads together and took steps to ensure everything goes smoothly even if we’re not in the same office. We’re still responding to students or people asking for help and information, and we’re still able to efficiently keep a handle on things.

We really appreciate Charlotte taking the time to share this with us. As you can see, whatever the circumstances, there’s always a future in the world of Administration. If you're looking for a reliable new field- jump in, and see what you'll find!
